The deep black onyx takes its name from the Greek and means as much as "fingernail". The onyx owes its name to its positive effects on skin, nails and hair.
In ancient times, the onyx was considered a protective stone against black magic and evil.
The gemstone was therefore a frequent addition in graves and should serve here as protection during the journey to the afterlife. Corresponding finds were discovered in Egypt and Greece.
